Edison and Ford Winter Estates Robotics Team Heading to Regional Championship Competition

FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 24, 2020) — The Edison and Ford Winter Estates (EFWE) homeschool robotics team, “Assembly Required,” placed among the top teams at the first LEGO league qualifier tournament and won an award for its robot mechanical design. The team is now advancing to the regional competition that will be held on February 1 at the Wa-Ke-Hatchee Park and Rec Center located at 16760 Bass Road in Fort Myers and at the Lexington Middle School at 16351 Summerlin Road.
During the competition, each team gets three attempts (each at a scheduled time and table) to complete as many missions as possible on the robot challenge field. Spectators are invited to watch the teams compete. TLC Engineering Solutions is the EFWE team sponsor.
EFWE offers many programs for children throughout the year, including “Science Scholars,” an ongoing homeschool series for grades 1-8. The program runs from September to April, with the following schedule: grades 1-3: 2nd Thursday of each month, 9:30-11:30 a.m.; grades 4-6: 2nd Thursday of each month, 1-3 p.m.; grades 7-8: 2nd Wednesday of each month, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. The sessions focus on the following.
- The Telegraph and Communication: history, code, and electronics
- Motors and Movement: history, physics, and energy
- Simple Machines: history, simple machines, and mechanics
- Sound Waves: history, sound waves and harmonics
- Light Waves: light science, and space science
- Designing Light Systems: history, light science, and design
- Field Research: history, chemistry, biology, and ecology
- Innovation & Collaboration: history, problem solving, and teamwork
Classes for EFWE members cost $15, or $105 for the eight-class series; the fee for non-members is $25, or $175 for the eight-class series and includes one adult and one child. Registration opens this summer at EdisonFord.org. Tours and admission to the museum and lab are not included.
