In 1587, 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island off the coast of present North Carolina. Their governor, John White returned to England for supplies. Delayed by a war with Spain, White did not return for three years. When he returned, he found no trace of the colony or the inhabitants. What happened to Roanoke?
